US$1.6 billion new projects for blue ammonia, CCS and solar in Qatar

HFIs QATVI - Qatar Ventures Initiative is supporting our clients’ ambitions in the massive Qatar US$80 billion projects market tracked in the latest EIC GCC markets update this week.

QatarEnergy’s Ammonia-7 project will see the largest blue ammonia global facility with a capacity of 1.2 mtpa of blue ammonia. Target start-up date is Q12026 at QAFCO’s Mesaieed Industrial City facilities. The US$1bn EPC contract was awarded to ThyssenKrupp and Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC). The project includes CCS facilities capable of capturing and sequestering about 1.5 mtpa of CO2 as part of Qatar’s plans to capture over 11 mtpa CO2 by 2035.

The project follows hot on the heels of a US$600 million EPC award to Samsung C&T for a solar project for two large scale photovoltaic power plants to be built in Mesaieed Industrial City and Ras Laffan Industrial City. Capacity will be 875MW with electricity production expected by the end of 2024, a major milestone in Qatar plans for 5GW of solar power by 2035.

The two projects build follow on from the massive US$30 billion North Field LNG Expansion announced last year.
