Japan Energy Summit 2025: Accelerating the Global Energy Transition
HFI represented by Hugh Fraser and Sally Reeves were delighted to attend the Japan Energy Summit & Exhibition 2025, June 18–20 held in Tokyo. The Summit was co-hosted by JERA Co, Inc. and Tokyo Gas and served as a powerful platform for collaboration across Asia and the Middle East.
The summit’s discussions were aligned with Japan’s newly released 7th Strategic Energy Plan. Developed by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the plan outlines Japan’s energy roadmap through to 2040, emphasising the “S+3E” principles—Safety, Energy Security, Economic Efficiency, and Environmental Sustainability.
METI notes the critical role of LNG in energy security with global demand to rise by more than 50% by 2040; the need to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen and ammonia; the importance of CCS to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors like power, steel, and chemicals; the role of nuclear energy, including small modular reactors (SMRs) for stable, low-carbon baseload power; the need for shipping efficiency; and the need to invest in grid resilience and smart grid technologies to support a flexible, decarbonized energy system.
The summit underscored the growing strategic alignment between Japan and the Middle East, with QatarEnergy's role in LNG supply well recognised.
Hydrom Oman showcased its green hydrogen ambitions, reinforcing Oman’s role as a future clean fuel hub for Asia.
ADNOC Group and aramco brought forward their perspectives on low-carbon solutions and the evolving role of hydrocarbons in a decarbonizing world.
Meanwhile, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) highlighted its technology leadership at the Barakah nuclear facility in the UAE, a milestone in regional nuclear cooperation.
HFI is keen to play a key role in supporting clients’ business growth opportunities, combining our consulting and legal know-how to deliver results, solutions and value.
Our focus is on advanced energy technology ventures in the Middle East region with four core service offerings – acquisitions & divestments; new territory expansion & local partner collaboration ventures; technology licensing & local manufacturing ventures; and restructurings, disputes resolution & managed exits.
HFI’s clients are drawn from four technology-driven sectors: petroleum & LNG; power & water (including nuclear, renewables, geothermal and desalination); subsea & marine and energy transition & net zero (including hydrogen and CCS).
